Getting started with trucking

Postby Ole Wise Kidd on Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:00 am

I would like to give some of you people that are interested in becoming a truck driver some good advice on how to go about getting started in the industry. The best route to becoming a truck driver is to start by going to your local state employment office and ask about CDL training. For the most part most states will set aside grant money to get you trained that you will not have to pay back, becuase they are getting you employed with a career and off un employment. This is the best possible route because you can choose which carrier you can go with after you graduate. Pay for the schooling yourself is another option, i know most people dont have the money to fork out but if you do, again this is another good way. Be cautious about which school you attend! there are good ones as well as bad ones. If you have a criminal record and the school says they will get you a job, dont take thier word call some companies to see if you qualify before wasting your time and money. If you want to work for a MAJOR carrier you must have a certified training course, dont run down to the DMV and get your permit, and take the driving test, and expect to get a job with a major carrier...wont happen. As a last resort Some companies offer paid training but know this, you will be required to sign a contract most cases at least a year, and if you quit before that contract is up, no major carrier will hire you because you still owe that company for your schooling and the company WILL NOT release your training certificate until its paid. I hope this will help some of you start on the right track!

It's because you only speak the truth!

It is wonderful to know...that you stick to your word...you are here for all drivers out there, I see it in all the effort you put forth when each one you speak to, as you have taught us. Kevin's motto for all is:

Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.

And with that...I am proud to work beside you.

Bla, complete bust no help with finacial training available, guess I may have to eat a year and go to one of the slum lord driving schools.

Any suggestions on who will screw me the least, or get me home on a 12/2 or 20/10, id like to stay married and not have a trucking career destroy my realtionship with my wife of almost 11 years.

thanks

lil back ground, Never arrested, 100 percent drug free, NEVER had a auto accident,
was a volunteer for LVMPD, C.E.R.T., Been at home last 2 years supporting my wifes career before that I owned my own home improvement business for 4 years."realestate market killed it". before that I worked for a local Electrical Contractor for 2.5 years. I'm located in Laughlin, Nv seems more like a no hire area so far from what ive seen ;-/

In the last 2 weeks I have been memorizing my DMV cdl handbook and learning the DOT rules and regulation on their website. Best I can do at this time. I'm looking foward to getting my cdl license and starting my career.

IM SHOCKED

Postby OTRDriverAvailable on Mon Sep 01, 2008 1:13 pm

@ how hard it is for you newbies to get into this? God it's only driving a truck hauling freight; not flying the space shuttle. I have no idea why my occupation [48 state otr trucking] has made it so hard for new people to enter? When im out their i see ton's of non english speaking people driving yet my own countrymen and women can't get in? Why? Have huge trucking companies ruined the occupation? Is it our government? I don't understand since im an older and started it long ago.Image

Option 3 for me

Postby roybennitt on Thu Jul 23, 2009 9:01 pm

Seems like option three is my only option as I have recently lost my two jobs, suffered through a bankruptcy, and lost my home. I am hoping to find a company that will pay for this training; however, I have found it hard to locate them on the Internet--maybe I do not really know what to search for. Anyways, hopefully I will get the information I need and get into a training program ASAP. I will be living in a tent soon, and I wont survive long doing that. Anyways, thank you for providing this board! I have really enjoyed it so far. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

I hate to say this to you, but living in florida is going to be a huge problem to get company sponsored training... try CCC or CTL they are not OTR but they do take trainees out of Florida... Good luck, the industry was great when I started this board, but its a bust right now....
