Driving School food for thought

Postby Greenacres0802 on Thu Mar 26, 2009 12:31 pm

I knew that statistics class in college would come in handy...

I have been doing alot of thinking about driving schools, and with the help of this website, it has only opened my eyes as to what to look for. for instance:

Company A:

Low tuition costs, 1 year contract, 90 days 2nd seat driving (12 CPM) based on average number of miles and deduction of tuition costs. at the end of 90 days $ 1,620 before taxes. That is based on paying tuition upfront. $5,299 if you take the no money down option. This is before taxes as well as subtracting the $75 a month tuition deduction. Thats 1,766 a month or $11 an hour based on an average 40 hour work week.

Company B:
Higher tuition rate, no contract, 30 days 2nd seat, with the option of the trainer to release you after 2 weeks. Base of $350 per week. (for comparison sake lets say you do the whole 30 days) Based on the average miles and deduction of tuition costs. At the end of 90 days, 1,865 before taxes. That is based on paying tuition upfront. $5,860 if you take the no money down option.(1yr Contract) This is before taxes as well as subtracting the $45 a month tuition deduction. Thats 1,953 a month or $12 an hour based on an average work week.

Both companies CPM were equal after training. Company A had lower incriments after 3 & 6 months. Company B's tuition was 2K more, yet you can make more money faster. And if you can afford the full tuition upfront there is no contract.

Again I understand that there are always brushfires that need to be put out and everything does not go as planned but like CPM, more is better. I would like to have an extra $1 an hour.

I did it through the first year of employment but I think you get the point. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, and oh yeah, NO LEASE.

Either way you go your going to have to pay the price. Hopefully you choose the right and affordable path.

I am trying to get into a CDL trucking school and I am coming across that they all charge a pretty heavy price and my promblem is I do not have that kind of money to put up front, What I am looking for is a company that pays for the training I think that would be my best bet, yes I know I will have to work for that company for awhile until everything is paid for and I have no promblem with that at all. I just do not know which companies that will pay for the full cost of training. Can you help me or at least suggest something in that nature,or if you know of any companies that will pay for the full cost of training, that would be great. I want this more than anything.

They all pretty much pay the same and reimburse you after your first year... have you looked into a grant?

I know the company I am with, PAM. Will pay for the schooling but you need to stay with them for 1yr. I'm not sure what state your in but look into a grant, like the one I got. It was called WIA program which we have down here in Florida; which paid the full 5k and I didn't have to pay them back. Yeah, that's right you tax payers gave me the money. =)

Here's a link to the WIA Program. Hope it helps.

My son is interested in getting into truck driving but wants to go the route with a company that has their own CDL program. Could anyone help me with this?
Thanks!

As far as I could remember not many of them are offering this anymore. Hmm.... I know if you look on the website I posted above and see if they offer the WIA program in your area and if not look and see if you have a school called CD1 in your area. That school I know PAM hires from.. So if your interested call PAM or CD1 and see what comes out of it.

In '98, I went to a Driving School in Tennessee and was given paperwork to apply for the Federal Student Loan (FSL) AND Pell Grant (Pell Grants = no pay back).
They were both approved without question.

A BETTER WAY to go the Loan route is to your local I.R.S. office or online, or Public Library and get Form SS-4 which is for a alternate SS# and when received (in about 2 weeks or so from initial mailing), the person then will have a SEPARATE CREDIT FILE/NUMBER which will not overlap the current file/number.
The SS4 states CLEARLY the 2 uses it is granted:
1) As a E.I.N. (Employer Identification Number [in case one is starting a business]).
2) As a ALTERNATE SS# and it arrives with documentation for verification, however it is NOT for a additional SS card.
AS long as you do not fill in the Alcohol information section (like for a business selling Alcohol), it'll be fine.
Just fabricate the other information.
