Career change

Postby Zeplisa63 on Mon Nov 16, 2009 3:43 pm

My husband and I are interested in starting a career in the trucking industry. Neither of us have a CDL so we would be starting at the very beginning. My husband talked to Swift, this was before I found this forum, and I would like to know if this company would be good to start out with. We cannot afford to pay for training up front but from what I have read one should be cautious. What questions should we ask and how do we know if we will have a job after training is complete? Any help would be much appreciated as far as how to break into this industry.

I don't know what state and city your in but if I was you two. First thing I would look into is WIA [Workforce Investment Act]; which is provided by the Government. To find it you will need to locate your local Workforce Board.

Its what I went thru and I got a 5k grant from the government to go to a trucking school and didn't have to pay a dime back.

If its free its or me!! :)

From what I have researched, by going thru company schooling your locked in for 1 yr! Solid and you won't be able to leave not matter how bad they treat you. And if you do leave then you have to pay them back; which to me I would not sign such a thing.

Hopefully that will help you two out and good luck.

Thanks for your input Taino. We live in Florida. My husband did talk to someone at the employment office about WIA and was referred to the local community college that gives a 7 week course but no funds are available until the first of the year from what he was told. When you say no matter how bad they treat you what do you mean?? I've been told to "get on with a good company" but not sure what is meant by this. How do the companies treat you bad?

Ah, Florida.. It's one of the worst states for trucking I have been told. Not many companies are hiring out of this state. If I lived in GA, I would/most likely probably be working at this time.

What I meant is like how any employers treat the employees. Either if they treat you like crap, give you crappy runs or whatnot.

But if you get with a good company then it should be okay. From what I am told about "get on with a good company", means their are better trucking companies then others. Some have more horror stories they others.

I don't know to much of this industry, just because I am a recent graduate and I only find information thru research or chat with my buddy.

If you by chance get in to a school, my best suggestion would be get your CDL permit before hand. That way it won't interrupt your schooling.
